The Painting of 2010 BMW Z4 Roadster

A work of art like no other, created by an artist like no other - the new BMW Z4 Roadster.

BMW’s famous series of art cars are all fantastic works of automotive art–the 3.0 CSLs by Alexander Calder and Frank Stella, the M1 by Andy Worhol, even Jenny Holzer’s strange LMR race car, which simply read “Protect Me From What I Want” across the top in big letters was interesting. But now it’s a new millennium and a new artist just has to come along and turn the idea of an art car on its head.

That’s exactly what Robin Rhode has done with the brand-new 2010 Z4, using it not as the canvas but as the brush. That’s right–Rhode covered a giant white floor with globs of paint, then had his buddy drive all over it, making lines and circles of tire treads in primary colors. To avoid any accidental mixing of colors, Rhode used various sets of tires, just as an artist would use different brushes. He’s calling the resulting football field-sized work “An Expression of Joy.” It took twelve hours to make, and as you’ll see in the gallery, actor Dennis Hopper tagged along, reportedly on assignment for Vanity Fair.
